Zingara! is an innovative
and unique production rarely seen in the Belly Dance genre. Written, choreographed, and directed by Newcastle dancer and choreographer, Sonya Manzalini, the show is performed by a diverse community of women and men united in their passion for dance.
The show tells the story of the seasons of life, the journey we all travel from child to elder.
Using archetypal themes and manifesting through powerful choreography, costuming, lighting, rhythms and music, Zingara reveals the spiritual, celebratory, and mundane aspects of life. The show aims to arouse the universal emotions of hope and joy, grief and loss common to all peoples, be they gypsies, refugees, mainstream or on the fringes of society.
The audience is immersed in the ambience of the private journey of a woman, from child to young woman, bride to mother, wise woman to elder.
Zingara! is a spellbinding, serious, playful, mysterious, respectful and powerful celebration!
Zingara combines gypsy/ folkloric belly dance, gypsy flamenco fusion and Bollywood, telling the story through a series of scenes and vignettes.
While many of the cast are “non-professional” dancers, the performance is enticing, energising, inclusive, polished, and at a professional level.
Audiences have been profoundly affected by Zingara!
