Fourth Coast Ensemble is proud to present the world premiere performances of I-Thou by Chicago composer Wayland Rogers on May 3, 4 and 6, 2018 at venues throughout the Chicago area.
The performances feature pianist Dana Brown alongside the ensemble in a staging by George Cederquist, Artistic Director
of Chicago Fringe Opera.
Commissioned by Fourth Coast Ensemble, I-Thou takes its title from the proposition of the German philosopher Martin Buber that human life finds its meaningfulness in relationships. The composer has selected texts that illustrate human interconnectedness from the canon of American and British poetry, including works by e.e.cummings, Frank O’Hara, Walt Whitman, William Blake, Robert Frost, and Anne Bradstreet.
I-Thou represents personal, intimate relationships. Starting with the nuclear family – mothers, fathers, children, and siblings – and proceeding to the wider family of friends, neighbors, and finally lovers and spouses – from whom a new nuclear family begins.
The new work, 33-minutes long, is presented alongside a selection of other works from Wayland Rogers’ catalogue. The concert lasts 75 minutes total.
