Walking Tour: Mount Vernon Place and Monument Climb

Tour co-sponsored by Baltimore Heritage. Price $10. Please reserve in advance.

Mount Vernon began as the estate of Revolutionary War hero John Eager Howard and grew to be the place to live for Baltimore’s rich and famous in the mid-19th century. The Garrett family, owners of the B&O Railroad, the Walters,

founders of the Walters Art Museum, and other families, built and lived in handsome mansions along the four parks of Mount Vernon Place surrounding the Washington Monument. The recent award-winning restoration to the 200-year old Washington Monument is the latest news from the revival of this historic neighborhood over the last decade. Join us on a tour to hear the stories behind the Washington Monument and see the landmarks of Baltimore’s grandest historic neighborhood. If your legs are strong, climb the Monument’s 227 steps for a birds-eye view of central Baltimore! Per city code, space inside the monument’s tower is limited. The tour will be capped at 15 people and we’ll meet at the South entrance of the Monument.
