The UCLA VEM String Quartet, a graduate string quartet-in-residence at UCLA’s Herb Alpert School of Music, is the cornerstone of the Armenian Music Program at UCLA, which, thanks to generous donor support and the assistance of community organizations, including the Tekeyan Cultural Association and Lark Music Society, endeavors to raise awareness and celebrate the richness and diversity of the Armenian musical tradition.

As part of their studies, members of the quartet strive to cultivate an appreciation and passion for Armenian music throughout the community via musical performances, music education, outreach services, and a series of collaborations with composers to create new works dedicated to and aimed at enriching the Armenian cultural heritage. Coached by members of the UCLA Alpert School of Music string faculty, including distinguished Professor of Violin, Movses Pogossian, the VEM String Quartet has also worked with such musicians as Nickolas Kitchen, Tigran Mansurian, and David Starobin.

The quartet has performed at various venues in Los Angeles including Zipper Hall, Bing Theater, Schoenberg Hall, and the Hammer Museum, as well as in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and at the Incontri in Terra di Sierra Festival in Tuscany, Italy in July 2014. In his review of their performance in Italy, critic Laurence Vittes writes: “The evening’s most memorable music was made by the VEM Quartet... who laid out Eduard Mirzoyan’s String Quartet with a feline, subtle grace that touched hearts with its gentle melodic content and long-lined eloquence.”

Danielle Segen (mezzo-sporano) is based in Los Angeles and has performed locally and abroad. The latter includes visiting the Republic of Armenia with the UCLA VEM String Quartet for a series of concerts in Yerevan. Past performances on the opera stage include Prince Charming in Massenet’s Cendrillon, Carmen in The Tragedy of Carmen, Dorabella in Così fan tutte, the title role in William Bolcom’s Lucrezia, and Cherubino in Saverio Mercadante’s I due Figaro. She holds a Master of Music degree from UCLA in Vocal Performance, and a Bachelor of Music degree from Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA.

Garrett Schoonover (bass-baritone) is a 2nd year graduate student at UCLA pursuing a master's degree in vocal performance, studying with Professor Michael Dean. Recent performances include UCLA's production of Massenet's Cendrillon (Le Roi, covering Pandolfe) and as a chorus member in Utah Opera's 2015-2016 season. Aside from singing, he is an aspiring composer. As a proud member of the Armenian Music Ensemble,
Garrett has coached with Vatsche Barsoumian, and performed with the VEM String Quartet at the Armenian Genocide Commemoration concert at the Hammer Museum.
