Throbbing Gristle Photo Exhibition - the ajanta cinema 1979

KGB present:
ANITA VARNEY - previously unseen photographs of TG at the ajanta cinema, Derby, 1979. Anita's imagery is an oblique industrial document of the legendary TG performance as it captures the chaotic mass of TG equipment amongst which we occasionally see the central protagonists of the industrial

music scene.

The ajanta TG performance formed part of the limited edition 24 hours tape set released in 1980 by Industrial Records and was also released later (1982) by Karange Records under the title 'Throbbing Gristle - Thee Psychick Sacrifice'. Anita's imagery will be complemented by a selection of TG related ephemera including the ultra rare ajanta cinema promo flyer and original artwork plus video installation art by artist Alasdair Ambrose.

For the opening event KGB have assembled a stellar line up of underground talent to perform on our concrete stage.

ACT I
D BONSALL /DJ HECTOR: -
David Bonsall & DJ Hector were the pioneering duo who jump started the ajanta as an experimental music venue. Headlines like 'PUNKS WRECK SEATS AT DERBY CONCERT' will give you some idea of how the civic authorities viewed the new look ajanta. Both David & DJ will discuss the reasons behind their decisions and provide some historical context of the ajanta as a 'new wave' music venue for the city.

ACT II
VAGINA DENTATA ORGAN: -
Catalan-born Jordi Valls / Vagina Dentata Organ is one of the most unpredictable artists of our generation. Combining the surrealism of André Breton, Salvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel with some grotesque humor of Hieronymus Bosch, Valls strives to document our imperfect society in all its beauty and ugliness. Under the moniker Vagina Dentata Organ, Valls has produced a series of vital audio and visual documents. In the early 1980s Valls was the communicator behind legendary industrial music bands such as Throbbing Gristle and Whitehouse. He collaborated with Derek Jarman on Catalan, a filmic reconstruction of a car accident Valls had been involved in. VDO last performed in the UK in 2015 at the Tate Modern and performances by Valls are very rare. Performing as part of the VDO live action will be extreme performer AJA, cellist SOPHIE WILLIAMS and an ensemble of drummers (names TBA once assembled). Not too be missed.

ACT III
JACK SARGEANT: -
Jack Sargeant is a British writer specializing in cult film, underground film, and independent film, as well as subcultures, true crime, and other aspects of the unusual. In addition he is a film programmer and an academic. Since 1995 Sargeant has written and contributed to numerous books on underground film, including: Deathtripping: The Cinema of Transgression, about Cinema of Transgression filmmakers such as Richard Kern and Nick Zedd, Naked Lens: Beat Cinema, and Cinema Contra Cinema, a collection of essays on alternative film. Jack is travelling all the way from Sydney to deliver his sub culture discourse and I'm pretty sure he'll have a suitcase crammed full of copies of his new book on Vagina Dentata Organ/Jordi Valls for you to shufty through (you heard it ere first!).

ACT IV
DARK UNION: -
DU was formed by the legendary UK synthesizer expert Glenn Michael Wallis of Konstruktivists, Conspiracy International, Whitehouse and Heute, Vargas artist and musician in Costa Rica and Mark Reynolds artist and punk musician in the USA. Glenn & Mark will be performing for the first time as DU, a very exciting prospect for KGB and will be a truly remarkable experience for all attendees.
