The Loft Movie Theatre is proud to present a screening of David Cronenberg's classic 1986 sci-fi body horror:
★ THE FLY ★
When eccentric inventor Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) exclusively shares his new teleportation device with scientific journalist Veronica Quaife (Geena Davis), they form a close
bond which quickly turns to romance. But when Brundle hastily decides to test out the machine's ability to transport living tissue by climbing inside it himself, he has no idea he is not alone. Only when his body starts to display mysterious signs of inhuman response and physicality does he investigate the cause, only to find out he had shared his tele-pod with a common housefly - the two beings now slowly metamorphosing into one tragic and monstrous creature.
An imaginative re-writing of the 1957 short story by George Langelaan (which inspired the original 1958 classic horror movie of the same name), The Fly represents the best of Cronenberg's creativity with themes of sexuality, psychological torment and identity surrounding a strong metaphor for how the reality of disease can affect even the strongest relationship.
With visceral practical FX designed by Chris Walas (which won him an Academy Award), genuine on-screen chemistry between Goldblum and Davis (who married a year later), and a driving score from composer Howard Shore, it is no wonder The Fly became Cronenberg's most commercially successful film, and still remains one of his most critically-acclaimed to date.
