The Concept of Context as a Social Work Assessment Tool.
Presented by Harrell Weathersby, Ph.D., LCSW.
Terrebonne General Medical Center, Medical Atrium Auditorium, 8120 Main St., Houma, LA 70360
The concept of context in this workshop refers to close scrutiny of collateral cultural and historical events
that shape both individual and collective thought. Use of the concept in therapy may reveal deeply embedded beliefs and values in both client and therapist that may affect the therapeutic relationship. Consideration of these factors may also aid in strategic planning for advocacy. Key to the discussion will be the sociological "critical-years hypothesis”: each generation frames a worldview through shared, collective memories of key events of their late childhood that continue to resonate positively or negatively, often at the unconscious level. Participants will engage in a series of exercises to demonstrate use of the concept. 3.0 General hours. Pre-registration deadline is 4/8/16.
