Didn’t train to teach food? Come from another subject?

Feeling unsure of teaching practical food lessons and

concerned about techniques and management of students and rooms in these fast paced lessons? Look no further, this is the course for you! Join like-minded NON-SPECIALIST FOOD TEACHERS for this 4 day course to share best practice, top tips and great ideas when working in the food room.

This is a series of 4 one day training events during 2015/16 to support non-specialists. It is envisaged that most delegates will attend all four; if all four events are booked in advance then a discount will be applied. You are also welcome to attend single events.

This programme of training is based on face to face interactive sessions with a wide range of skills being covered, but ensuring how to deliver these appropriately to students. We aim to build delegates self-esteem and competency in practical application through providing practical skills training and guided learning...bringing the Wow factor into your classroom!

All delegates will receive access to a digital delegate folder with all the presentations, useful handouts and resources.

DAY 1 Food Preparation and Cooking Skills


What is Cooking and Nutrition? What’s happening in food teaching and how will this affect your role?
Ensuring that the room is safe to work in – knowing about the key systems and processes needed.
Delivering practical lessons – smooth operations! Planning practical lessons; demonstration techniques; tasting, testing and food experiments; reviewing the skills and techniques that need to be taught; safe use of large and small equipment ; weighing and measuring
Providing support with "what if" scenarios so that all students can succeed in achieving quality end products
Teaching and learning overview with cross curricular links



DAY 2: Food in the Curriculum


Understanding the principles of managing food lessons in a whole school curriculum
Understand how food contributes as a cross curricular area to the whole school food policy (and work effectively with colleagues in PE, Science and other areas to develop a consistent approach to food education across the school)
Your role in changing attitudes and behaviour in relation to healthy diets
Managing teaching and learning in practical food lessons – structuring activities, demonstrations, identifying risks in advance and managing safety, managing groups, planning time within lessons



DAY 3: Nutrition and Food Science part 1

Using the Eatwell Plate;


Energy and nutrients
Nutritional needs for different groups
Aspects of food choice


Colloidal systems: in food products


Resources to support effective teaching – equipment, learning resources, support staff.
Planning follow up activities



DAY 4: Nutrition and Food Science part 2

Plus Managing the food room

Raising the profile of the subject for KS4 options.




Further development of knowledge and application of understanding to healthy eating and nutrition
Cooking techniques and application and transfer of heat
Multi-cultural cooking and constraints
Review of examples of good practice and sharing of experiences
How to show and track pupil progression

FOOD TEACHER CENTRE is a UK based self-help group founded by Louise T Davies in 2013 and supported by experienced associates. It provides a platform to exchange best practice, give advice and support to less experienced teachers, answering practical concerns and keeping them abreast of the latest curriculum changes. A one-stop shop for like-minded professionals who seek help and information. It is free to take part and is facilitated through a closed on-line group, safeguarding the conversations of the teaching staff.

The idea of a 'Teacher's Centre' is a response to the lack of local and national specialist support and diminishing Continuing Professional Development with the demise of local authority advisers ASTs, lead practitioners and supporting organisations.
