Mr. Rex Weltz, Superintendent of Polson School District, will address the Pachyderm Club and any members of the community who are interested in school safety.
In Montana we know the federal Gun Free School Zones Act allows staff to bring a gun to school “as part of a program approved by a school in
the school zone.” The Montana Code Annotated 45-8-361 allows local Montana school boards to arm teachers, administrators and staff. Nationally, only about 32% of school staff is in favor of being armed. We also know that if the school buildings are hardened then the next point of attack may be where the buses load or off load their students. Polson is dealing with a variety of facilities 20+ years of age and an increase in the number of children and teenagers with mental health issues. All of these considerations should be discussed openly as well as possible solutions for school safety to protect the well-being of students.
Mr. Weltz will discuss this seemingly insurmountable local issue.
