by Jim Cartwright
Directed by Dr. Beverly Redman

Under the guidance of the rum-soaked wild boy,
Scullery, the audience is taken on a tour of a scruffy, depressed road in a small Lancashire town in the north of England. Moving from street corner to living room, from bedroom to kitchen, we meet the young, middle-aged, and old inhabitants of this poverty stricken, working-class area during the government of Margaret Thatcher. Glimpsing at the bawdy, hilarious, deprived lives of these socially and emotionally wretched characters, this magically uncomfortable play is sharp, sad, funny, bitter, and angry. In a poll conducted by the Royal National Theatre, Road was voted the 36th best play of the 20th century.
