This presentation by Linda R. Struckmeyer, MA, OTR/L will provide the recent history of the development of the Home Environmental
Assessment Protocol- Revision (HEAP-R) . The HEAP-R is a home modifications assessment for persons with dementia and their caregivers. As the incidence of dementia increases so will the need for occupational therapy services, such as home modifications, that promote aging in place. A home modifications assessment specific to the unique needs of persons with dementia can guide the occupational therapist in addressing caregiver and client needs related to environmental barriers and supports.
Current research examining the content validity of the tool will be presented. Participants will view a short training video on the administration of the tool and have the opportunity to score three different homes using the HEAP-R. At the end of the presentation participants will have the opportunity to sign up to participate in a study to examine the inter-rater reliability and test-retest reliability of the HEAP-R.
By the end of this session the participant will be able to:
1) Describe the process of the HEAP-R instrument revision process.
2) Describe the current research being done to examine the psychometrics of the HEAP-R.
3) Score the HEAP-R assessment tool.
4) Consider if they want to participate in ongoing research of the HEAP-R tool.
