our campaign to label GMOs successful!********
Right now, 80% of processed food in this country contains genetically modified (GMO) ingredients. In our current political climate, it is almost impossible to get overwhelming consensus on any one issue. Yet, 90% of Americans support the mandatory labeling of GMO food.
Even still, giant agri-business companies, like Monsanto, are fighting tooth and nail to silence the public and deny us our right to make informed decisions about what we are eating and feeding our families.
We have the right to know what’s in our food. Period.
Luckily, in New York, a bill has been introduced that would require GMO food be labeled statewide. Food and Water Watch is rallying grassroots support all across the Hudson valley in order to ensure that the state assembly brings the GMO labeling bill to a vote this spring.
Here is New Patlz, we play a critical role in the success of this bill. If our representative, Assemblymember Cahill, takes on a substantial leadership role regarding GMO labeling, it would be a huge step toward ensuring we pass this statewide legislation. But, to get him on board, we need to show him the degree to which his constituents support labeling.
Over the course of the next two months, we will be working hard here in New Paltz to build a cohesive coalition of local businesses and farmers to show support. Furthermore, we will be rallying the community from a grassroots perspective, generating 100 calls in to Assembly members, gathering 1000 signatures from residents, and putting on big events in our community in order to bring people together, provide more context on GMOs, and give folks to opportunity to take concrete and meaningful action.
Our first big event is THURSDAY, JANUARY 21ST at the Elting Library from 7:15-9:15pm. Come to Food and Water Watch’s free documentary screening of “GMO OMG” in order to learn more about how GMOs impact our children, our health, and our planet. It will be a great opportunity to be in community, get further tapped in to the movement, and share your ideas in order to help us make this campaign successful!
We look forward to seeing you there!!
