Learn To Love Beetles

Location: FSC Amersham, Mop End, Bucks (see course brochure for more details)

Fees: £5 - Booking essential

If you’re interested in beetles but never felt ready for a beginner’s ID workshop, then this day is for you! It’s a day for people who are fascinated by beetles but don’t know where to start with

them. It’s a very gentle introduction to the world of beetles and the art telling one type of beetle from another.

- Come and see different types of live British beetles
- Learn some of their names
- Learn how to tell a few of them apart
- Listen to some fascinating talks from a beetle expert
- Find out what to do if you want to take your interest further

Most of the day will take place in the classroom, but if the weather is good, we will go outside to look for some interesting beetles.

Please note that this course is an introductory course and absolutely no experience of beetles is needed – just a passion for nature and learning more about wildlife that is often overlooked.

About the tutor

Katy Potts has been fascinated by Beetles since 2013 when she was introduced to them by a professor when studying Conservation Biology at university. She now works at London’s Natural History Museum in the Beetle department where she is curatorial assistant working on an African Beetle project. She was also one of the first year trainees on the Identification Trainers for the Future project at the NHM (which was in partnership with the Field Studies Council) where she spent the year training in species identification and studied teaching so that she could then pass these skills on to others. Katy also co-manages the National Longhorn Recording Scheme which collects and manages all records for Longhorn Beetles in Britain. Katy has a real passion for Beetles and hopes to inspire others on this Learn to Love Beetles course.

This course is heavily subsidised by the FSC BioLinks Project (funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund).
