FIU’s study abroad experience in Genoa is based on the idea of living in an Italian city with a complex history but above all a rich present, and without a large US student population. It
goes beyond a touristic experience as the students are encouraged to live there and to engage with the city. Courses utilize Genoa as a lens through which students gain a perspective on broader issues affecting the present, regardless of the field or discipline. This study abroad program is designed for students who are interested in Hospitality and Tourism studies.
Undergraduate students: HFT 4955* – Field Study Abroad (undergraduate elective)
*This elective course may be completed more than once. Speak with your academic advisor for additional details.
Classes will be taught by Prof. Patricia Sadar. You will be registered for your study abroad class by the Office of Study Abroad after your acceptance to the program.
The program fee of $1,615 includes accommodations, group trips, health insurance, and the $175 study abroad fee. Tuition, airfare, and meals are not included. All students participating in this study abroad program are eligible for in-state tuition for the classes above.
ACADEMIC GROUP TRAVEL
Participants will take part in several group trips. As these trips are academically focused, they are a required component of the program; students may not opt out of the academic group travel. Trips may include day trips to museums, local sites and subjects applicable to the themes of the course.
Students may have the opportunity for individual personal travel over weekends, as Genoa is well-served by rail and an international airport. By train, Milan is 1.5 hours away; Pisa is 2.5 hours; Florence is 3 hours; and Venice is 5 hours.
Our academic facilities are in the medieval monastery of S. Maria di Castello, one of the treasures of Genoa in the oldest part of its historic quarter. We have a beautiful sequence of spaces with garden, cloisters, and views of the port and mountains, wi-fi internet (you must bring your own laptop), and a nearby metro stop in Piazza Sarzano.
Student housing is offered in various apartments in the city center within walking distance of the FIU facility and shopping areas. All apartments are furnished, and have easy access to public transportation.
