THEATRE HORIZON presents
New Directors' Movement

FUNKTIONEN!
Physical Workshop by Makoto Matsushima

In this workshop, Makoto Matsushima, the instructor, continues to explore the concept of "Funktionen." The potentials of a performer is enhanced by means of limiting the movement of certain parts of the body, creating innovative ways of moving. As the awareness for actions, behaviour and motivation of the performer is increased, a kind of body-mind synchronicity is achieved. This in turn shortens the reaction time of a performer when changes occur. These funktionen or functions include:
1) Material
2) Observation
3) Interpretation
4) Mediation
5) Manipulation
While Material is not a function, it can stand alone or interact with other functions.
The instructor will use one of these or a combination of these functions throughout the workshop.
There are 20 hours of work in this 5-session workshop. Participants are required to attend barefooted and to work in attire suitable for moving.

This workshop is an extension of Theatre Horizon's production of The Irresistible Rise of Arturo Ui of the 'New Directors' Movement' series.

"New Directors' Movement" is financially supported by the Arts Capacity Development Funding Scheme of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. This workshop is part of the project.
