Over the last six months, there has been an unprecedented targeted attack against lawyers defending human rights defendants in China. There have been hundreds of arrests and detentions and some lawyers and
families have been prohibited from leaving the mainland. By all accounts, this crackdown is meant to discourage human rights lawyers from taking up the causes of defendants who need representation. Threats, jailings, and harassment of families are part of this process. Apparently, there is a "blacklist" of lawyers who are targeted for this type of harassment and interference with their ability to practice their professions. How should the international legal community respond? What is the responsibility of legal professionals worldwide? How should Bar Associations respond? The Panel discussion will include Professor Robert Lutz, Southwestern University School of Law, and Malcolm S. McNeil, Partner at Arent Fox, China Practice Group, Co-chair of the ABA SIL China Committee, and Member, Board of Governors, BHBA.
