The fulfillment of teaching has been historically met with the psychological labor of racial conflict and unfair wages. From “The Strike That Changed New York” to CUNY union protests for equal pay, the “city’s student” is largely left behind, in excess to the “the city’s teacher.” A significant dilemma
is posed when the connection to community is stifled-- specifically among Black teachers, students, parents. Historically, Black People have never lacked the internal resources and instincts to build community, however the persistent presence of inferiority keeps us from building an equitable foundation in our schools. This issue continues from high school and into the adverse perspective placed upon community college systems of higher ed, the institutions that our high school students will use as a stepping stone. In the face of two very different hierarchies, we are bringing a group of educators, students, and parents together to discuss, what is a community school?
