Synopsis of Play:
A timeless work, the rock opera is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.
"Loosely based on the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, Superstar follows the last week of Jesus Christ’s life. The story, told entirely through song, explores the personal relationships and struggles between Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, his disciples, his followers and the Roman Empire."
Actors should arrive at least 10 minutes prior to your audition time and come prepared with a copy of your head shot (these will not be returned). An accompanist will be provided. Please bring your music in a hard-backed binder clearly marked. No music from vocal only librettos, lead sheets, or "easy piano" books will be accepted. The pianist will not be expected to transpose. There will be a dance call, so please come prepared with a change of dance appropriate clothing and shoes. Actors should prepare 2 brief contrasting songs (roughly 32 bars each) in the musical style of the show, not to exceed 2 minutes total. Please do NOT include a song from the show in the audition package, but be familiar with the show.
Seeking to cast:
JUDAS (20s/30s; Tenor)
One of Jesus’ twelve apostle, he is increasingly concerned for the consequences of Jesus’ fame, despite his loyalty to him. Tortured and afraid, yet compassionate. He sings with a raw, emotionally-charged passion.
JESUS (20s/30s; Tenor)
Leader of twelve apostles and is believed by many (including himself) to be the son of God. Motivated by righteousness and acceptance. He is strong willed, yet humble, a rock and roll wailer, and a “Superstar.”
PETER (20s/30s; Baritone)
The head apostle and Jesus' right-hand man. He is loyal, loving, and in awe of Jesus, but ultimately denies Jesus three times on the night of his arrest to save himself.
MARY MAGDALENE –(late teens/30s; Mezzo-Soprano)
A devoted follower of Jesus. She is protective, caring, nurturing, and strong. Having been self-reliant all her life, she is conflicted about her deep feelings for Jesus.
PONTIUS PILATE –(30s/40s; Baritenor)
Governor of Judea who accurately foresees the events of Jesus’ crucifixion from beginning to end. He is a conflicted, yet stern leader who hesitates to put Jesus to death, but ultimately does so at the urging of his people.
HEROD –(30s/50s; Tenor)
The fabulous, yet fierce King of Galilee who mocks Jesus’ stardom when he is dragged before him. Relishes in his power but has a playful spirit.
ANNAS –(30s/50s; Countertenor) & Caiaphas –(30s/50s; Bass)
The officials who negotiate with Judas for information regarding Jesus whereabouts to aid in his arrest. Afraid of Jesus’ threat to their power and order in their community. Covert and stern.
SIMON ZEALOTES –(20s/40s; Tenor)
One of Jesus’ apostles. Urges Jesus to lead his followers into battle against the Romans.
