Join us for an evening with Pulitzer Prize-Winning author

Jhumpa Lahiri and Strega Prize-Winner Domenico Starnone. These literary masters will discuss their most recent collaboration—Lahiri's translation of Starnone's novel, Trick, from Italian into English. Starnone is considered one of Italy's greatest living writers and has garnered international acclaim. Meanwhile, Lahiri—whose latest work, In Other Words, explores the role of language and identity—has made the fascinating choice to live her creative life in Italian, writing original work exclusively in that language. She was inspired to approach English again as a translator by reading Starnone’s novels and their newest collaboration, Trick, is a brilliantly devised drama where the rage of an aging man smashes up against the optimism incarnate in a young child—his four year old grandson. Michael Reynolds, Editor in Chief of Europa Editions, will moderate the discussion that examines the creative life choices of these prominent writers and the book that brought them together.

Jhumpa Lahiri is the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Interpreter of Maladies. Her books include The Namesake, Unaccustomed Earth, The Lowland, and, most recently, In Other Words, an exploration of language and identity. She is the translator of Starnone’s Ties and, now, Trick.

Domenico Starnone was born in Naples and lives in Rome. He is the author of thirteen works of fiction, including First Execution (Europa, 2009), Via Gemito, winner of Italy’s most prestigious literary prize, the Strega, and Ties (Europa, 2017), a New York Times Editors Pick and Notable Book of the Year, and a Sunday Times and Kirkus Reviews Best Book of the Year.

Michael Reynolds has been with Europa Editions, where he is currently the Editor in Chief, since 2004. Authors he has worked with at Europa include Alina Bronsky, Amelie Nothomb, Elena Ferrante, Chantel Acevedo, Charlotte Wood, Julie Lekstrom Himes, and Alexander Maksik. He is also an author and a translator whose published translations include crime novels by Carlo Lucarelli, and Viola Di Grado’s prize-winning novel 70% Acrylic 30% Wool. Reynolds is the recipient of the 2016 Golden Colophon Award for Superlative Achievement & Leadership in Independent Literary Publishing, awarded by the Community of Literary and Magazine Presses. He was born in Australia in 1968 and now lives in New York.
