18th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights Conference & Youth Summit

The Whatcom Human Rights Task Force and the Whatcom Peace and Justice Center invite the community to join us for the Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Human Rights Conference on Saturday, January 16, 2016. The Conference will run from 9:30 am to 3:30pm at Syre Center at Whatcom Community College.

No

advance registration is required for this event (Except for teacher clock hours!) and it is free and open to the public.
Clock hours will be available for Bellingham and Ferndale School District educators.

This year's theme will be "Listening as a Radical Act: Honoring All Voices". Our keynote speaker will be W.Tali Hairston, director of John M. Perkins Center for Reconciliation, Leadership Training, and Community Development. at Seattle Pacific University. Managing a diverse staff and resourcing students, staff, faculty, alumni, and stakeholders; Hairston oversees co-curricular programs in global and urban service learning programs, intergroup dialogue, and experiential education opportunities in justice, poverty, ethnic identity, and cultural capacity. His talk is titled, "Just Listening: Hearing the Voices of the Marginalized".

Following the keynote speaker there will be a Youth Summit for students grades 8-12, facilitated by the New Wilderness Project. Also other skill building workshops will be provided and led by community educators and activists. Light refreshments available throughout the morning. Food vendors will be on site with lunch options for sale.

This event is free and open to the public of all ages. Students and educators are encouraged to attend.
